THE GREAT DYING

THE GREAT DYING
is led by Will Griffith, a Mississippi Delta born, country singer-songwriter residing in Oxford, MS. He might be from the Delta, but Will doesn’t see his dark country musings as directly blues influenced. Punk rock, however, felt like Will’s kind of blues and was devoid of the phoniness and commercialism that drove tourism in the area surrounding his hometown of Cleveland, MS. “I want people to celebrate sad music because of its beauty. Sad songs help you laugh at your own sadness. They are meant to help you keep going,” says Griffith.

Will’s songcraft bears evidence of his punk and metal upbringing. The show keeps audiences guessing and may remind folks of Dead Moon, Magnetic Fields, Waylon, Silver Jews, DBT, The National etc at any given turn. But whether the music rocks full-on electric or uses pummelled acoustic guitars, Griffith’s visions of wild nights and bleary, self-loathing mornings are impossible to resist. We’ll let Brett Barest of iongreenville tell you a bit more.

“Their recent album Bloody Noses & Roses is a rollercoaster of musical expression, taking you through so many genres and styles that it would almost feel like a mix tape were it not for Griffith’s distinctly Southern, gravelly voice keeping it all tied together. The opening track “Nobody Arrives” has a clear singer/songwriter feel before giving way to a full on hard rock sound with a distinct Mississippi Delta blues influence on “The Cellar Below”. Things slow down for a moment with the  haunting Americana feel of “Catchin’ Hell” before “100 MPH” clubs you over the head with a punk rock ride reflective of the song’s title. The line “I want to dance/I want to scream your name/I want some more tequila/and I always want cocaine” stuck in my craw to the point that I have been randomly blurting it in less than appropriate situations. And so it goes for the entirety of the album as folk, rock, blues, country, and punk all come together on one album with dark, often intense songwriting keeping you hanging on every word. I have lost track of the number of times I have listened to the album yet new lines keep catching my attention, forcing me to hit rewind just to digest them in full – a sure mark of a well-written album in my opinion.”

THE WILLIAMSON BROTHERS
Brothers ADAM & BLAKE WILLAMSON have been playing music together since they were kids.  Together they make up the rhythm section of our friends LEE BAINS III & THE GLORY FIRES and before that played in Vesper and Black Willis, bands in their hometown of Birmingham.  Williamson Brothers (Birmingham, AL) Adam & Blake Williamson of Alabama rock band Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires have unveiled a first collection of duo material. When the pandemic struck the brothers took advantage of the time off and recorded an album with help of their friend Mike Patton (Drive-By Truckers and The Dexateens).  The self-titled album has the loose, melodic and noisy feel of 90’s indie rock a la Sixteen Deluxe, Teenage Fanclub and Dino Jr.

“Adam and I, have played in a band for about 24 years straight in some form or fashion,” Blake says. “We’ve both been in Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires for, I think Adam’s going on for eight years and I’m going on 11.  We used to have a band called Black Willis, and we wrote all these songs and it was more of a bar rock kind of thing.  I had this fun batch of tunes I’ve been working on my own.  Adam kind of fell right in line and said let’s go record a record.  We weren’t really planning on putting out a record, but Matt Patton offered to do the recording and we agreed to do it.  He said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to put your record out guys.’  We’re like, you don’t have to do all that.  He said, “Yeah, we’re doing it.” (laughs) The material was born out of the necessity.  I just had this urge to write some tunes that I couldn’t shake it for a while.  I actually feel better now that I’ve gotten it out.”

We can’t wait to dive into some dark, raw-edged rock n’ alt-folk with these two bands on August 11th, and we hope you’ll join us. Make sure to stop by THE BOHEMIAN CAFE next door for some delicious grub and your favorite adult beverage. We’ll have both albums in-stock, too!
