Founded by bassist/singer Mark Burgess, The Chameleons (or The Chameleons UK) never quite reached the same level of commercial success as many of their Mancunian contemporaries (New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses).
Due to their atmospheric sound, the British press often referred to the Chameleons as “sonic architects,” something they must have enjoyed, after being inspired by The Edge‘s effects-heavy ambience on the early U2 records.
Jangly and sparkling guitars, along with a tight rhythm section, blended perfectly with Burgess’ anxious yet impassioned lyrics, commenting on Thatcherism and northern England’s bleak landscape.
After three cult classic albums, Script Of The Bridge (’83), What Does Anything Mean? Basically (’85), and Strange Times (’86), and the death of their manager, Tony Fletcher, the group dissolved in 1987.
They reformed for a brief stint from 2000 to 2003, releasing one new studio album and two acoustic albums, before going on another long hiatus. Burgess and drummer, John Lever, continued performing Chameleons songs as ChameleonsVox, until Lever’s death in 2017.
Finally, in 2021, Burgess and original guitarist, Reg Smithies, along with Todd Demma (drums), Stephen Rice (drums, guitars), and Danny Ashberry (keys), reformed and have a new album, Arctic Noon, slated for release later this year!
While we wait in anticipation, go catch The Chameleons on their Strange Times tour, Thursday, October 24th @ The Radio Room!
